How will messages appear on my wireless phone? When you receive a text message, your phone will alert you that you have a message. The word "message" and/or an envelope icon will appear on the handset. Visual alerts will vary by phone model. Refer to the phone user manual for details on how the incoming message will be displayed. A text message is a combination of words and numbers sent to a digital phone. Use the scroll keys (up, down) on your keypad to review the entire message. You can choose to forward, save or delete the message. < top What information is included in the message? Subscribers to the Kansas Homeland Security Notification System will receive a total of 100 characters in the message text. This includes the name in the FROM: field and a topic in the SUBJECT: field. The message will indicate whether there has been a change in the national or state alert status, and the level of new alert status. Refer to the Kansas Homeland Security Notification System for more information about the alerts and for other related information. < top What if my wireless phone is turned off when the message is sent? Most wireless phone service providers will attempt to deliver the message when your phone is powered on and you are in the digital service area. If the phone is powered off or you have traveled outside of digital service area, the wireless service network will store the message for later delivery. The network will attempt to deliver the message for several days from the date of receipt of the message. When the phone's memory is full, you may not be able to send or receive messages. Memory capacity varies by make and model of the phone. You will receive a warning that the memory is almost full or full (message varies by handset). It is recommended that you delete old messages, prior to receiving new incoming messages. < top
